Blood and Moon
Blood and Moon
The female menstrual cycle and the lunar phases share the same length, approximately 29.5 days, and this connection has been present in human cultures for thousands of years. Depending on whether a woman bleeds during the full moon or the new moon, traditional systems recognized two basic types of cycle, each carrying a different energetic quality and a specific archetype.
The Red Moon Cycle
A woman whose menstruation comes during the full moon is bleeding at the moment when the moonlight reaches its peak. While the outer world is fully illuminated and the surrounding energy moves toward expansion, her body turns inward. This contrast between outer brightness and inner withdrawal creates a specific state that naturally supports introspection, focus, and deeper self-knowledge. Many of these women orient themselves in time according to the moon phases rather than the conventional calendar, because their body responds to the lunar rhythm as its primary measure of time.
In many ancient cultures, bleeding during the full moon was associated with women who held a specific social role. Their function was connected to creative and visionary activity rather than reproduction or household care. Because their energy during menstruation did not flow outward toward the world, it became concentrated, and this focused inner potential naturally transformed into the ability to see connections, form new ideas, and create healing or ritual processes. Their maternal principle expressed itself symbolically, through creation, insight, and the ability to break old patterns in favor of change.
The Red Moon cycle corresponds to the archetype of the prophetess, healer, or visionary. It is the path of a woman who has a natural ability to perceive subtle layers of reality and bring knowledge that goes beyond ordinary rational thinking.
The White Moon Cycle
The opposite is the White Moon cycle, in which a woman bleeds during the new moon and ovulates during the full moon. This rhythm is closely aligned with outer nature: as the moonlight grows, her energy, vitality, and orientation toward creation and nourishment grow as well, while bleeding during the new moon, a time of darkness and silence, serves as cleansing and preparation for a new cycle.
The White Moon corresponds to the archetype of the Mother. The energy of this woman naturally flows toward other people and expresses itself through the ability to create a safe environment, stability, and security. Motherhood can manifest here both in a biological and a symbolic way, through support, protection, and the ability to keep life structures functional. These women strengthen the continuity of relationships, family, and community across generations, and their power lies in grounding and in the ability to pass on values and life force.
The Red and the White Moon represent two poles of the same feminine energy that complement each other. One turns inward and supports transformation, insight, and the creative process, while the other turns outward and supports nourishment, care, and continuity. One breaks down outdated structures so that space for the new can emerge, while the other maintains and stabilizes what is worth preserving. Both of these rhythms are natural, equally valuable, and each of them carries a specific expression of feminine power and purpose.
Krev a měsíc
Jeden směřuje dovnitř a podporuje transformaci, vhled a tvůrčí proces, druhý směřuje ven a podporuje výživu, péči a kontinuitu. Jeden narušuje zastaralé struktury, aby vznikl prostor pro nové, druhý udržuje a stabilizuje to, co má smysl zachovat. Oba tyto rytmy jsou přirozené, stejně hodnotné a každý z nich nese specifický projev ženské síly.
