Untamed Lilith

According to ancient texts, the first woman in paradise was not Eve, but Lilith. These texts describe Lilith as a being created at the same time as Adam and from the same essence. She was not derived from man nor subordinate to him, but existed as his equal counterpart. In the context of the patriarchal worldview of that time, this was something completely unacceptable.

When she and Adam made love, Lilith demanded equality. She wanted to be on top, to be seen, to be recognized as an equal partner. Adam refused, saying that he was the superior one and she should submit. But Lilith did not bend. According to the text, she spoke the sacred name of God, which gave her the power to leave the material world, and she left paradise. It was not an act of rebellion in the sense of revenge, but a conscious decision. Lilith chose exile over submission and solitude over the loss of her own integrity. She was the first woman who said no.

Adam asked God to bring her back. God sent three angels who found her by the Red Sea. But Lilith refused to return. When the angels threatened her that for every day of her disobedience, a hundred of her children would die, she answered that so be it, but she would not come back. To replace her, God created Eve, this time from Adam's rib. Eve was no longer equal, but derived. Her role was to complement, not to question.

Lilith was nearly erased from the old texts and in later religious traditions was turned into a demon, a temptress and a threat. In folk Judaism, she was called the queen of demons and her name became a synonym for dangerous female sexuality. From a spiritual perspective, however, Lilith did not fall. She stepped out of a system that defined her by conditions that were incompatible with her true nature, and she became an archetype that has since existed on the threshold of female consciousness as a reminder that obedience is not the same as love and that freedom has its price.

Psychological archetype

In Jungian psychology, Lilith represents one of the strongest expressions of the Shadow archetype of the feminine principle. Carl Gustav Jung described the Shadow as the part of the human psyche that contains everything we were forced to suppress because it was not acceptable to our surroundings. For women in patriarchal cultures, this includes a whole spectrum of qualities: wildness, instinct, sexual autonomy, the ability to say no, anger and uncontrollable creative power.

Where culture elevated obedience, silence and self-sacrifice as the highest female virtues, the principle of Lilith was systematically pushed into the unconscious. But the suppressed energy did not disappear. It showed up as unconscious anger, compulsive sexuality without emotional connection, envy, passive aggression or manipulation. However, these are not expressions of the Lilith archetype itself. They are only its distorted masks that appear when it is suppressed and has no space for conscious integration.

Clarissa Pinkola Estés, a Jungian analyst and the author of the book Women Who Run with the Wolves, described this suppressed female instinct as the "Wild Woman," a primary feminine archetype connected with intuition, creativity and the cyclical nature of life and death. In her perspective, the encounter with the Lilith archetype during personal growth becomes a key point of individuation, the process that Jung identified as the path toward wholeness of one's own psyche. In this process, a woman confronts her wildness, her anger, her sexuality, her desire for freedom and the sadness of rejection, and instead of suppressing these parts, she learns to consciously accept and integrate them.

This process is demanding precisely because patriarchal systems have actively blocked it for centuries. The female power to create, to heal, to connect and to mirror the truth was seen as a threat because it could not be controlled. The tools of control became shame, guilt, humiliation and violence. The natural psychological consequence of this suppression is anger.

Anger

On the Hawkins Map of Consciousness, Anger has a calibrated value of 150, which places it below the level of Love (500), but it represents a crucial developmental point. A person at the level of Anger already realizes that their boundaries have been violated, and this awareness is not possible without a certain degree of self-worth. Anger is also a very dynamic energy where a person begins not only to sense that change is possible, because they realize they deserve more, but Anger also gives them the strong energy needed to take action.

For comparison, at the level of Grief (75) or Guilt (30), consciousness is still paralyzed by helplessness and mourning and the way out is not yet in sight. Anger is therefore not a destructive force that needs to be eliminated. It is an energy that, when processed consciously, can move a person toward Courage (200), the first level where consciousness begins to function constructively. The Lilith archetype carries exactly this quality: Anger that comes from the refusal to live in conflict with one's own truth.

Lilith in astrology

In astrology, Lilith appears as the so-called Black Moon, which is not a planet or an asteroid, but a mathematical point. It is the empty focus of the elliptical orbit of the Moon around the Earth. This seemingly abstract point in the birth chart has a deep symbolic meaning because it shows the area where a person experiences the deepest instinctive layer of their psyche.

The position of the Black Moon in a specific sign and house of the birth chart reveals where a person refuses to submit, where they face an inner conflict between authenticity and conformity, and where they may experience feelings of rejection for being who they truly are. Lilith in the birth chart points to the place where a person is confronted with their raw truth, with who they really are beneath the layers of social masks and learned behavior.

In a woman's birth chart, the Black Moon is often connected with the theme of suppressed sexuality, creativity or intuition. For men, it can point to a suppressed relationship with the feminine principle, the Anima, and to the type of feminine energy that evokes both fascination and fear in them at the same time. In both cases, Lilith is an invitation to integration, not to suppression.

Lilith in the modern woman

Today, the Lilith archetype shows up in new forms, even though its essence remains the same. It shows up in every woman who refuses to be quiet, nice and acceptable only on the condition that she submits. It shows up in the moment when a woman stops shrinking her creativity, suppressing her intuition or apologizing for her intelligence and strength just to meet the expectations of others.

It is important to understand that patriarchy is not only about men. It is an energetic and cultural system rooted in women themselves as well. Whenever a woman makes herself smaller to fit into a role that was assigned to her, whenever she suppresses her creative impulse or ignores the signals of her own intuition, she keeps this system alive. And on the other hand, whenever a woman consciously steps into her full power, without the need to apologize for it or to hide it, she fulfills the legacy of this archetype.

The integrated Lilith archetype means the ability to stand in one's own truth without the need for external validation, the ability to say no without guilt and the ability to create without apology. A woman who has integrated her Lilith does not need to fight the system from the outside, because she has stopped maintaining it from the inside.

From a deeper perspective, Lilith is an archetype that stands on the boundary between the spiritual and the material world. A woman by her very nature embodies the cyclical principle of birth, transformation and death, the very essence of life. When a woman stops hiding behind assigned roles and allows herself to be fully present in her authenticity, she is not awakening anything new within herself. She is simply remembering what has always been there, only silenced for a time.

Nespoutaná lilith

Podle starých textů nebyla první ženou v ráji Eva, ale Lilith. Tento text, popisuje Lilith jako bytost stvořenou současně s Adamem a ze stejné podstaty. Nebyla tedy od muže odvozena ani jemu podřízena, ale existovala jako jeho rovnocenný protějšek. V kontextu tehdejšího patriarchálního výkladu světa to bylo něco naprosto nepřijatelného.

Když se s Adamem milovali, Lilith požadovala rovnost. Chtěla být nahoře, být viděna, být uznána jako rovnocenná partnerka. Adam to odmítl s tím, že on je ten nadřazený a ona se má podřídit. Lilith se však neohnula. Podle textu vyslovila posvátné Boží jméno, čímž získala moc opustit hmotný svět, a odešla z ráje. Nebyl to akt vzdoru ve smyslu pomsty, ale vědomé rozhodnutí. Lilith si zvolila vyhnanství místo podrobení a samotu místo ztráty vlastní integrity. Byla první ženou, která řekla ne.

Adam požádal Boha, aby ji přivedl zpět. Bůh vyslal tři anděly, kteří ji našli u Rudého moře. Lilith ale odmítla návrat. Když jí andělé vyhrožovali, že za každý den neposlušnosti zemře sto jejích dětí, odpověděla, že tak ať se stane, ale že se nevrátí. Aby nahradil její odchod, Bůh stvořil Evu, tentokrát z Adamova žebra. Eva už nebyla rovnocenná, ale odvozená. Její úlohou bylo doplňovat, nikoli zpochybňovat.

Lilith byla ze starých textů téměř vymazána a v pozdějších náboženských tradicích přeměněna na démona, svůdkyni a hrozbu. V lidovém judaismu byla označena za královnu démonů a její jméno se stalo synonymem pro nebezpečnou ženskou sexualitu. Z duchovního hlediska ale Lilith nepadla. Vystoupila ze systému, který ji definoval podmínkami, jež nebyly slučitelné s její podstatou, a stala se archetypem, který od té doby existuje na prahu ženského vědomí jako připomínka, že poslušnost není totéž co láska a že svoboda má svou cenu.

psychologický archetyp

V jungovské psychologii představuje Lilith jeden z nejsilnějších projevů archetypu Stínu ženského principu. Carl Gustav Jung popsal Stín jako tu část lidské psyché, která obsahuje vše, co jsme byli nuceni potlačit, protože to nebylo přijatelné pro naše okolí. U žen v patriarchálních kulturách to zahrnuje celé spektrum vlastností: divokost, instinkt, sexuální autonomii, schopnost říkat ne, hněv a nekontrolovatelnou tvořivou sílu.

Tam, kde kultura povýšila poslušnost, tichost a obětavost jako nejvyšší ženské ctnosti, byl princip Lilith systematicky zatlačen do nevědomí. Potlačená energie však nezmizela. Projevila se jako nevědomý hněv, kompulzivní sexualita bez emocionálního spojení, závist, pasivní agrese nebo manipulace. To ale nejsou projevy samotného archetypu Lilith, jsou to pouze jeho zkreslené masky, které se objevují tehdy, když je potlačen a nemá prostor k vědomé integraci.

Clarissa Pinkola Estés, jungovská analytička a autorka knihy Ženy, které běhaly s vlky, tento potlačený ženský instinkt popsala jako „divou ženu" neboli Wild Woman, primární ženský archetyp spojený s intuicí, kreativitou a cyklickou přirozeností života a smrti. V její perspektivě se setkání s archetypem Lilith během osobního rozvoje stává klíčovým bodem individuace, tedy procesu, který Jung označil za cestu k celistvosti vlastní psyché. Žena v tomto procesu konfrontuje svou divokost, svůj hněv, svou sexualitu, svou touhu po svobodě i smutek z odmítnutí, a místo aby tyto části potlačovala, učí se je vědomě přijmout a integrovat.

Tento proces je náročný právě proto, že patriarchální systémy ho po staletí aktivně blokovaly. Ženská síla tvořit, léčit, propojovat a zrcadlit pravdu byla vnímána jako ohrožení, protože se nedala kontrolovat. Nástrojem kontroly se staly stud, vina, ponižování a násilí. Přirozeným psychologickým následkem tohoto potlačení je hněv.

Hněv

V rámci Hawkinsovy mapy vědomí má Hněv kalibrovanou hodnotu 150, což ho řadí pod úroveň Lásky (500), ale představuje zásadní vývojový bod. Člověk na úrovni Hněvu si již uvědomuje, že jeho hranice byly porušeny, a toto uvědomění není možné bez určité míry vědomí vlastní hodnoty. Hněv je také velmi dynamickou energií, kde člověk začíná nejen vnímat, že změna je možná, protože si uvědomuje, že si zaslouží víc, ale také mu Hněv dodává velkou energii potřebnou k realizaci.

Pro srovnání, na úrovni Smutku (75) nebo Viny (30) je vědomí stále paralyzováno bezmocí a truchlením a cesta ven zatím není v dohledu. Hněv tedy není destruktivní síla, kterou je třeba eliminovat. Je to energie, která při vědomém zpracování může člověka posunout směrem k Odvaze (200), tedy k první úrovni, kde vědomí začíná fungovat konstruktivně. Archetyp Lilith v sobě nese právě tuto kvalitu: Hněv, který vzniká z odmítnutí žít v rozporu s vlastní pravdou.

Lilith v astrologii

V astrologii se Lilith objevuje jako takzvaná Černá Luna (Black Moon), což není planeta ani asteroid, ale matematický bod. Jedná se o prázdné ohnisko eliptické dráhy Měsíce kolem Země. Tento zdánlivě abstraktní bod v horoskopu má hluboký symbolický význam, protože ukazuje na oblast, kde člověk prožívá nejhlubší instinktivní vrstvu své psyché.

Pozice Černé Luny v konkrétním znamení a domě horoskopu odhaluje, kde se člověk odmítá podvolit, kde čelí vnitřnímu konfliktu mezi autenticitou a přizpůsobením, a kde může zažívat pocity odmítnutí za to, že je sám sebou. Lilith v horoskopu ukazuje na místo, kde je člověk konfrontován se svou surovou pravdou, s tím, kdo ve skutečnosti je pod nánosem společenských masek a naučeného chování.

V ženském horoskopu bývá Černá Luna často spojena s tématem potlačené sexuality, tvořivosti nebo intuice. U mužů pak může ukazovat na potlačený vztah k ženskému principu Animě a na to, jaký typ ženské energie v nich vzbuzuje fascinaci i strach zároveň. V obou případech je Lilith výzvou k integraci, nikoli k potlačení.

Lilith v moderní ženě

V dnešní době se archetyp Lilith projevuje v nových podobách, i když jeho podstata zůstává stejná. Projevuje se v každé ženě, která odmítá být tichá, milá a přijatelná pouze za podmínky, že se podřídí. Projevuje se v momentě, kdy žena přestane zmenšovat svou kreativitu, potlačovat svou intuici nebo se omlouvat za svou inteligenci a sílu, aby vyhověla očekáváním okolí.

Je důležité rozumět tomu, že patriarchát není pouze o mužích. Je to energetický a kulturní systém zakořeněný i v ženách samotných. Kdykoli se žena zmenší, aby se vešla do role, která jí byla přidělena, kdykoli potlačí svůj tvořivý impuls nebo přehlíží signály vlastní intuice, udržuje tento systém při životě. A naopak, kdykoli žena vědomě vstoupí do své plné síly, bez potřeby se za ni omlouvat nebo ji maskovat, naplňuje odkaz tohoto archetypu.

Integrovaný archetyp Lilith znamená schopnost stát ve vlastní pravdě bez potřeby vnějšího potvrzení, schopnost říci ne bez pocitu viny a schopnost tvořit bez omluv. Žena, která integrovala svou Lilith, nepotřebuje bojovat proti systému zvenčí, protože jej přestala udržovat zevnitř.

Z hlubšího pohledu je Lilith archetypem, který stojí na hranici mezi duchovním a hmotným světem. Žena ze své podstaty zosobňuje cyklický princip zrození, proměny a smrti, tedy samotnou esenci života. Když se žena přestane schovávat za přidělené role a dovolí si být plně přítomná ve své autenticitě, neprobouzí v sobě nic nového. Pouze si vzpomíná na to, co v ní vždy bylo, jen bylo na čas umlčeno.
