Relationships today are no longer "forever" and "till death do us part". A large part of the unnecessary suffering, pain, and feelings of failure that people experience during divorces comes from a deep belief in the validity of these vows.

To survive as children and keep our bond with our caregivers, we started to hide our true selves. We adjusted to what others expected from us, because we instinctively knew that our life depended on this bond. We betrayed ourselves to keep the bond.

When we say DNA, most people immediately think of the genetic code that determines eye color, hair color, or height. In reality, DNA carries much more complex layers of information that go beyond biology.

Family was the foundation of safety, certainty, and orientation. Offering shelter, a name, social status, and the rules by which one was meant to live. To belong to a family meant to know where I stand, to whom I belong, and what is expected of me.
