Emotional Blackmail

Emotional Blackmail

Dr. Susan Forward described one of the most common and at the same time hardest to recognize dynamics in human relationships in her book Emotional Blackmail. Its core is a situation where one person transfers responsibility for their own feelings onto someone else. If the other person fails to meet their expectations, they systematically use guilt, obligation or fear against them to literally force compliance through these feelings.

Emotional blackmail can occur in all types of human relationships, whether family, friendships, work or romantic partnerships. Certain dynamics, however, appear more often than others. In romantic relationships, the blackmailing side is more often the man and the blackmailed side is the woman. In family relationships, this dynamic very often plays out between a mother and her son, where the mother controls her son's decisions through guilt and obligation well into his adulthood. A specific group where emotional blackmail is deeply rooted in cultural patterns are Asian families, where the sense of duty towards parents and respect for authority naturally create conditions for this dynamic to persist across generations.

Classic blackmail works in a fairly straightforward and open way. "If you don't do this, something will happen." Emotional blackmail is a more sophisticated form, but its impact runs much deeper. It essentially says "make sure I feel good, or I will make sure you feel bad." The whole dynamic therefore rests on shifting responsibility for one person's inner world onto someone else's shoulders.

In practice, this looks like the person who blackmails stops communicating, withdraws into silence or lets you know that you have disappointed them, all because you acted differently than they wanted. Their message is clear. If you don't take responsibility for their feelings and make sure they feel better, they will make you feel it so that you feel bad. The most serious form of emotional blackmail is threatening to commit suicide, to self-harm, to stop eating, to stop functioning in everyday life, to fall into depression, to get sick, to suffer, and you are the one they assign the role of the cause of all that suffering. They put themselves into a state where they suffer and then declare that it is your fault. At the core of emotional blackmail lies one key mechanism. The person who blackmails uses your empathy against you. They hold your feelings hostage.

This whole relationship dynamic always requires two participants, because each of them carries a specific belief that makes such a destructive relationship possible, keeps it going and sets it in motion. The person who blackmails operates from a sense of entitlement. They are deeply convinced that other people are responsible for how they feel, and therefore others have a duty to act in ways that make them feel good. Instead of taking responsibility for their own inner world, they demand that their surroundings adapt. The person who allows themselves to be blackmailed operates on the exact opposite principle. They take on responsibility for feelings that do not actually belong to them and they deeply believe it is their job to make sure others feel good. While the blackmailer wants everyone around them to behave a certain way, the blackmailed person wants everyone around them to feel a certain way. While the blackmailer feels entitlement, the blackmailed person feels debt. While the blackmailer passes judgement, the blackmailed person longs to be judged positively. While the blackmailer demands that others comply, the blackmailed person longs to comply. And while the blackmailer's mind is dominated by taking, the blackmailed person's mind is dominated by giving.

If you project this pattern into the context of a romantic relationship, you will understand why love does not actually play a role in it. This kind of dynamic is based purely on power, where one controls and the other submits. It is mutual slavery. A healthy relationship is a mutual dynamic between two people that needs an equal exchange of energy, attention, respect and care in both directions in order to function. In a relationship where one blackmails and the other submits, no equal exchange takes place.

Staying in emotional blackmail long term has a devastating impact on both participants, although it shows up differently. The person who blackmails sinks deeper and deeper into the belief that they are entitled to have others ensure their happiness. They hang their entire emotional experience on the actions of other people, and because they believe others are responsible for their feelings, they never gain real control over their own emotions. They are dependent on what someone else does. The person who is being blackmailed is dependent on how others feel, and through this they gradually lose themselves. They sacrifice their own wishes, needs and desires for the sake of the other person for so long that one day they realize they actually have no idea who they are, what they want or where they are heading, because their entire world has narrowed down to a single function, and that function is to comply. Ultimately, the blackmailer is a slave to the actions of others and the blackmailed person is a slave to the feelings of others. Neither of them is truly free.

The way out of emotional blackmail leads through a fundamental inner shift, and that is taking responsibility for your own feelings and desires. A person sees clearly that they alone are responsible for how they feel. For their thoughts, their words, their actions and their inner experience, they bear responsibility exclusively. Nobody else has or can have ownership over their inner world. This is their natural birthright, one they were born with and one that nobody can take away from them, although in childhood this right may have been denied or suppressed. Your feelings are yours and the other person's feelings are theirs. Recognizing emotional blackmail requires the willingness to look at the dynamics of your own relationships with honesty, without distortion, and the ability to tell the difference between real closeness and a power game, between real care and control. And above all, it requires the courage to admit that a relationship built on guilt, fear and obligation is built on foundations that have nothing in common with love.

Klasické vydírání funguje poměrně přímočaře a otevřeně.

Celá vztahová dynamika vyžaduje vždy dva účastníky, protože každý z nich nese specifické přesvědčení, které takto destruktivní vztah umožňuje, udržuje a uvádí do chodu.
